At a press conference, the programming for ULTRAcinema 12th edition was presented, an event that has been a meeting space dedicated to presenting, promoting and disseminating all types of audiovisual experimentation in any format for 12 years. On this occasion, is dedicated to Afrofuturism, in addition to having a special section to celebrate 100 years of the 9.5 and 16mm formats, reported the Baja Film Commissioner, Javier Espinoza Medina, who was accompanying Yadira Gutiérrez, organizer of the event, along with José Luis Martín from Antropotrip, and Karim Chalita, Secretary of the Tourism and Conventions Committee (COTUCO).

The organizer explained that Afrofuturism is a cultural and artistic movement that focuses on exploring and reimagining the future through an Afro-descendant lens. It combines elements of science fiction, fantasy, and African and African-American history to create narratives, music, art, and aesthetics that challenge traditional narratives and depict a future in which black communities play a central and empowered role.

On this occasion, the festival is presented in two stages, the first will take place between October 14 and 22, taking place in Tijuana, Mexicali, Ensenada and Tecate, and will later be screened from October 23 to 29 in Tepic, Toluca, Cuernavaca, Xalapa and Mexico City. Outside the country it has functions in the cities of Asunción, Paraguay, and Cochabamba, Bolivia. The activities in Baja California begin on Saturday, October 14 at the Cine Libertad in Tijuana to commemorate World Home Cinema Day, where the community is invited to dust off their home cinema films and projectors, and the film “Home” is also projected. by Jano Burmester (Peru-2022). On Sunday the 15th the activities continue at the Petanca Gallery in Ensenada and on Wednesday the 18th at the Cine Curto in Mexicali where the Centennial of the 9.5mm format will be celebrated.

The programming continues at the Cineteca Tijuana at the CECUT on Thursday the 19th with the screening of the Inaugural film of this edition "A cinema called Libertad" by director Yadira Gutiérrez and in addition, the Official Selection Afro Diaspora and Afrofuturism is shown at the Zacazonapan Bar On Friday the 20th there will be performances at CECUT and at the Rabia Caracol Enclave. On Saturday the 21st at the independent cultural space of Tijuana nettnett, a reflection table will be held around experimental cinema with the curatorial team of ULTRAcinema, to finally have its event closing ceremony with Antropotrip at the Horno de la Montaña de Tecate, on Sunday, October 22, as indicated by José Luis Martín.

Filmmakers from Mexico, the United States of America, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Japan, Albania, Indonesia, Costa Rica, South Korea, Australia, India, Rwanda, among others, participate in the Official Selection. The Mexican titles to highlight with: “La memoria se filtró por una grieta” (Pablo Martinez-Zarate, 2023), “Desechos Tóxicos” (Arian Sánchez Covisa, 2023), “Ajá” (Agua) (Dennis Noel López Sosa, 2023), “Yaxche'oob” (Pablo Cruz Villalba, 2022) and “Nyanga” (Medhin Tewolde, 2023).

Of the international works, “Terra Mater” (Kantarama Gahigiri, 2023), “Aqui onde tudo acaba” (Cláudia Cárdenas y Juce Filho, 2023), “Skyscraper Film” (Federica Foglia, 2023) and “Three sparks” (Naomi Uman, 2023) stand out. The opening films are presented: “Un Cine Llamado Libertad” (Yadira Gutiérrez, 2023) and “Neptune Frost” (Saul Williams & Anisia Uzeyman, 2021), in addition to the special presentations of “Hogar” (Jano Burmester, 2023) and the documentary “Pola Weiss” (Alejandra Arrieta, 2023).

Finally, the Commissioner said that all ULTRAcinema activities are free and open to the public.
