TIJUANA.- Filmmakers from Baja California will have a special participation in the XII edition of DOQUMENTA, International Festival of Film and Non-Fiction Narratives to be held in Querétaro, Qro. from August 7 to 11, reported Javier Espinoza.

The Baja Film Commissioner explained that during the last twelve years, DOQUMENTA MX has established itself as a space for the dissemination of Mexican documentary cinema, through some of the most important films in the country, but also with an opening for emerging directors.

Directed by Natalia Bermúdez, “Norte” (2023) is nominated for the “Ariel Award” for Best Documentary Short Film, was selected at the San Diego Latino Film Festival and received the award for Best First Feature at Docs MX and as Best Documentary at the Guanajuato International Film Festival (GIFF). Regarding this work, Bermúdez commented: “It means a lot to me that a festival like DOQUMENTA MX joins the effort to bring our beloved “Norte” to more people.”

Likewise, Nicolasa Ruiz participates with “Obachan” (2020), winner of Best Documentary Short Film in Shorts México and participant in the Visions du Réel, Black Canvas, Morelia and Mar del Plata festivals. Ruiz said about this short film: “For me it is very important to continue sharing stories like those of Fuyu Kiyota; a strong woman passionate about her culture and with a deep love for life. A complex person, full of nuances and experiences that make me feel identified, understood and that I am not alone.”

The third short film is “Amor Ice” (2023), directed by Katy Araiza, selected within the Short Film Corner of the Cannes International Film Festival and winner of Best Documentary Short Film at the GIFF, in addition to having participated in the Morelia and Icarus in Central America. About the inspiration to do this project, Araiza said: "It arises from the need to tell a story that multiplies in many women who enter and leave rehabilitation centers. They suffer more from bad love than from substance use." ".

For his part, Aarón García del Real, co-director of the festival, highlighted the importance of this selection in the DOQUMENTA program... “we are excited for the opportunity to share these three titles from Baja California with Querétaro audiences, and to have the presence of its filmmakers during the special screening. We believe that this exchange between both states enriches the documentary film scene and strengthens actions that seek the decentralization of the film industry in Mexico."
