Historically, the city of Tijuana has been a hotbed of cinematic talent in all its facets, as well as an ideal space for the production of foreign content, which currently results in significant economic benefits in various areas. Today, the city offers three bachelor's degrees in film at universities and private institutions, while communication and related programs continue to train professionals dedicated to film and audiovisual. Despite this, there are still many areas of specialization that are not covered. Not only in the city but throughout the state of Baja California, there is a need for initiatives that seek professionalization and a reflective approach for anyone interested in film beyond pursuing a bachelor's degree or participating in production projects.
It is in this context that the Foro de Análisis Cinematográfico (Film Analysis Forum), in partnership with Duo Cine, are joining forces to launch a series of refresher, specialization, and discovery courses in underexplored areas in the region, but with enormous potential. The first workshop, which is now open for applications, is titled "Writing, Film, and Criticism," and will be taught by film critic Carlos Rgó from Mexico City.
The workshop is aimed at "people pursuing a bachelor's degree and a general audience interested in art and aesthetics, that is, those interested in transforming their sensitivity into rigorous knowledge. No prior experience is necessary," commented Carlos Rgó.
The workshop is divided into three sections. The first, focused on Writing, will seek to confront the blank page by identifying the difficulties that exist in translating audiovisual symbols into written language. The second, focused on Cinema, seeks to answer what films are and what traits to choose when we write or reflect on them. The third section, on Criticism, will provide tools for participants to identify their approach to film criticism, their commitments to society, and their relationship with others. The workshop facilitator has served on the preselection jury for various Mexican film festivals, won the "Fósforo" criticism competition (graduate category) at UNAM, and has contributed to festival catalogs and various magazines such as Correspondencias. Cine y pensamiento, Icónica, and laFuga. He is currently a PhD candidate in Latin American Studies at UNAM, specializing in Criticism and Literature in Latin America.
The workshop will be held online with limited capacity on April 23, 24, and 25 from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM and on April 26 from noon to 2:30 PM, Pacific Time (PST). The registration fee is 200 Mexican pesos.
