Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico.– In collaboration with the Mexican movie theater chain Cinépolis, the Baja California Film Commission of the Ministry of Economy aAnd Innovation (SEI) will present the feature films “Broken Borders” and "Amongst the Ropes” at 6 p.m. on August 13th as part of the “BC by BC” exhibition, announced the Undersecretary of Creative Industries, Abelardo Vázquez Ramos.
The SEI official emphasized that the exhibition, which will be held jointly and free of charge at Plaza Río ("Amongst the Ropes") and Plaza San Pedro ("Broken Borders") in the municipalities of Tijuana and Mexicali, respectively, aims to showcase two film projects produced in Baja California by local talent and crew.
"With the 'BC by BC' exhibition, we seek to showcase Baja California's filmmaking talent and strengthen our creative community. These productions, made by local talent and crew, reflect our state's ability to generate quality content and project it through strategic alliances like the one we have with Cinépolis,” said Vázquez Ramos.
Javier Espinoza Medina, Baja Film Commissioner, noted that both films, produced in the state, have received recognition at various festivals both in the country and abroad.
Rodrigo Álvarez's “Broken Borders” received the Best Film award at the Guanajuato International Film Festival, the Audience Award at the Cine las Américas Film Festival; the Jury and Distribution Award at the Ensenada International Film Festival; and Best Film at “Hola México” held in Los Angeles.
Meanwhile, Fernando A. Fisher's “Amongst the Ropes” received the awards for Best Film and Best Director at the Lulea International Film Festival, Norrbotten, Sweden; Best Film by Audience at the “Lift Off Filmmaker Session” in London, United Kingdom; and Best Film at the “Thespian Cinema Fest 2025” in Los Angeles, California.
Espinoza Medina stated that the film “Amongst the Ropes” tells the story of a superhero, from the perspective of its director, Fernando A. Fisher, who fights against everything in a world where not everything is bad or colorful like in a comic book, and where it changes over time. It's a metaphorical struggle against the life we live today.
While the film “Broken Borders” by Rodrigo Álvarez Flores, filmed in Tijuana, depicts a city steeped in great aspirations and melancholic endings, it is home to individuals who, although ready to take flight, remain rooted in their surroundings. The film explores the universal themes of love, violence, desire, and their consequences, woven around a plot that emerged from a personal obsession with stories that intertwine the destinies of various characters, he said.
