Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico – The world premiere of “Un techo sin cielo” (A Skyless Roof), the fourth feature film by director Diego Hernández, will take place in the official selection of the Ahora México Competition at the UNAM International Film Festival (FICUNAM) in its 2025 edition, as announced by Baja California Film Commissioner Javier Espinoza.
Hernández is a native of Tijuana, and his films have won awards at the FIDMarseille, FICUNAM, and ZINEBI festivals. He has also been a part of Mar del Plata, Márgenes, Black Canvas, Cámara Lúcida, FICMonterrey, MIDBO, Bogoshorts, and the Cineteca México International Forum. In 2022, the EUREKA University Film Festival dedicated a retrospective to his work.
The film stars Lízbeth Félix, Graciela Rodríguez and Diego Hernández, who also served as director, producer, screenwriter, editor, cinematographer, sound engineer, and VFX designer, with sound design support from Fulvio Cortez. "Un techo sin cielo" is the story of Diego, who, after opening a shoebox, begins to feel severe fatigue that prevents him from performing everyday activities and leaves him bedridden. At the same time, his friend Liz suffers from mysterious insomnia while developing a stage production.
Filming lasted approximately 15 days between eight months, on location in Parque Rubí in the San Antonio de los Buenos district of Tijuana. Regarding the film, the director commented: “The film was funded thanks to the Baja California 2023 Program for the Promotion of Artistic Creation and Development (PECDA), in the Young Creators category. I think it's vital that these forms of state funding exist for this type of film, which is smaller and doesn't require large budgets, as it's produced under alternative production schemes.”
The fifteenth edition of FICUNAM will be held from May 29th to June 5th, 2025, at various venues in Mexico City, presenting 117 titles, of which 65 are feature films, 52 are short films, with 18 world premieres and 27 Mexican premieres, totaling 7,963 minutes of footage on display.
